The first truly effective retinal implant for patients suffering from conditions ranging from geographic atrophy (GA) to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has arrived in Europe.
It is a combination of a surgically implanted photovoltaic chip and glasses that capture and project images into the implant.
The study involves 38 patients who, after 12 months of using the visual prosthesis, reported an improvement of 25.5 letters on the ETDRS scale (equal to more than 5 lines on the chart).
However, the results should be read taking into account the small number of patients involved and the fact that the vision provided by the implant is limited and monochromatic.
Even with this necessary clarification, news like this cannot help but make us believe in life more and more.
